MIDDLE SCHOOL CLASSES

The following are a sample of our offerings for Summer 2020.

Summer 2021 classes will be posted in February of 2021.

Middle school classes are for students entering grades 6 - 9 in August.

SUMMER 2020 CLASSES

Students are registered by the week and can sign up for a single week, or can elect to enroll for up to five weeks. Each week has different class offerings, and students register for two classes each week. 

Period A runs from 8:45am to 10:35am, after which there is a 20-minute break.

Period B runs from 10:55am until 12:45pm.

NOTE: all classes will run subject to enrollment. If a class is cancelled due to lack of enrollment, you will be contacted. Instructors are not guaranteed and may be switched without notice.

#101A & 101B  Cooking: Staples of the States

**This is a two-period class**

Take a road trip through the United States, making different cuisines from each region of the country. From the Northeast to the Southwest, taste the foods that are considered staples across the country. Come join us for a yummy and fun week!

#102A  Optical Illusion Art

Did you know that you can create art that tricks your eyes into seeing three-dimensional shapes on two-dimensional surfaces? In this class, you will learn geometrical tricks to create an illusion of depth in your artwork. You won’t believe your eyes when you see all the amazing drawings that you will create in this class.


#103A  BestCoast Video Productions

Learn to film, produce, direct, edit and host your own TV show. You will develop and edit multiple video segments together to create a full-length show worthy of a million views! Each week a new episode will be created and uploaded.


#104A  Point and Click Adventures

Classic gamers love the functionality of the traditional point-and-click game. See if you have what it takes to conquer games such as Machinarium, Botanicula and Samorost 2.


#105A  Racing Robots

Get into the driver's seat as you help Ollie, a racing robot, execute tricks, move about, and take on student-created tracks. Race the other robot teams and see if you have what it takes to be a Coding Champion!


#106A  Soccer

Spend time on the soccer field with our fun-filled activities! Progress through the many stages of the game to develop confidence, passing/shooting/dribbling techniques, and motor skills such as change of speed and change of direction. 


#107A  PErfectly Fun PE

Want to have fun in the sun and learn how to properly run? Join us for PErfectly Fun PE! This class will give you the physical education skills you need in middle school and beyond. Build your confidence and self-esteem in all things fitness by working with others and PErfecting your fitness goals.

#108B  Expressive Cartooning

Dive face-first into basic techniques of designing realistic cartoon characters. Explore the visual language of facial expressions by studying the “looks” of popular cartoon characters. Then draw your own cartoons by focusing on face variation and details. Let’s face it, you don’t want to miss out on this cartooning class!


#109B  Let’s Get Our Hands Dirty!

Dig right in and get your hands dirty, learning the best ways to plant new seeds and cuttings. Get practical “green thumb” experience by working in the gardens around the JAMS campus. Discover the magnificent plant life that’s all around us on field trips to local parks. At the end of the week, you’ll take home your own plant so you can maintain and care for it. This hands-on class will definitely GROW your love of planting!


#110B  Middle School Masters

This class is designed to help prepare and organize you for middle school, both academically and socially. You will learn how to be a successful student by learning strategies for managing both the triumphs and challenges of middle school. By the end of this course you will feel confident, prepared and excited for the upcoming school year.


#111B  Summer Dance

Spend your week dancing, creating and performing, all while having fun. In this session, you will learn different styles of dance such as Hip Hop, Jazz, Salsa and Swing dance. No prior dance experience necessary.


#112B  Field Games

Let's hit the field and have a fun day of games, including Kick Ball, Dog Catcher, Capture the Flag, Steal the Bacon, Red Light/Green Light, Relay Races and more! Improve your coordination, stamina and overall fitness in a fun and exciting way.


#113B  Flag Football

Flag football is perfect for students who want a complete introduction to America’s game, or for those who simply want to brush up on their skills. Students will learn skills on both sides of the ball, including the core components of passing, catching, route running, and de-flagging, all presented in a fun and positive environment. Students will also engage in full-sided games of flag football by creating their own offensive and defensive plays.

**This is a two-period class**

Come create and taste dishes ranging from the traditional flavors of Colombia to the modern flavors of the Caribbean. Enjoy the ingredients that make Latin foods so diverse, master new recipes, and have tons of fun!

#202A  Oil Pastel Party - Basics

Oil pastel colors are versatile and fun to work with! Learn how to draw with oil pastels by smudging and mixing colors together to achieve different results. We will cover oil pastel basics and learn how to produce a variety of effects, including soft, muted shading, subtly blended color passages, vibrant sweeps and slashes of pure color. The possibilities are endless when you create art with oil pastels!


#203A  Holy Batman! Create Your Own Comic

Avengers, assemble! In this project-centered course, you will combine storytelling and visual art to complete an original mini-comic book. Artists of all levels are encouraged and welcome!


#204A  BestCoast Video Productions

Learn to film, produce, direct, edit and host your own TV show. You will develop and edit multiple video segments together to create a full-length show worthy of a million views! Each week a new episode will be created and uploaded.


#205A  #TechSkillz

Are you ready to develop your typing skills and learn all things TECH? In this course, you will learn tips and tricks to improve your computer skills and be ready to tackle any online assignment. You will learn skills such as how to use Google Suite, including Google Slides, Google Drawings, and Google Docs. Get ready to learn #TechSkillz that you will use in middle school, high school, college and beyond!

Watercolors allow artists to expand their creativity with different textures, like making colors bleed, splatting, and even adding rubbing alcohol or salt for cool results. Come and experiment while making paint swatches and creating paintings of nature.


#209B  The Art of DJ’ing and Beat Making

Interested in creating and recording your own electronic music track? Want to be the next Billie Eilish, Clairo or Roddy Ricch? In this class you will learn how to make trap and dance beats, record and auto-tune vocals, and sample various live instruments and sounds to create your own music. By the end of the week you will have your own MP3 files to share with the world!


#210B  Gamify with Twine

Everybody has a story to tell. Twine is a simple but powerful online tool you can use to create dynamic stories that change with every telling. With Twine, you'll learn how to “gamify” your writing and get an introduction to the exciting new world of Interactive Storytelling.

**This is a two-period class**

Come and test your decorating skills in our “Nailed It”-themed class. It’s all about the dessert – let’s see if you have what it takes to be the champion. Come join us for a yummy and fun week!

#302A  Fashion Sketching

If you are an artist or fashionista, this class is for you! You will learn how to sketch fashion figures by learning proper proportions. We will cover basic line drawing techniques to ensure that our sketches are centered and balanced. Start designing your own fashionable items in this fashion-sketching course!


#303A  Podcast Production

Have you ever wondered what your own radio show would be like? Are you a storyteller, a comedian or a critic? Would you host a talk show, do investigative journaling or interview interesting people? Learn the art of podcasting. Use recording and editing software and your own imagination to develop your very own podcast that can be shared with all. Let your voice be heard!


#304A  Not Quite Dangerous Experiments

This class will give you the opportunity to do experiments that you can’t do at home: play with dry ice, blow up hydrogen balloons, and coat objects with copper and electricity, to name just a few. Explore different disciplines of science with hands-on experiments and projects.


#305A  Hot Topics: Learn to Debate

Got the power of persuasion? In this fast-talking course, you will channel your passion for real-world topics into logically sound arguments. Let’s debate! 


#306A  PErfectly Fun PE

Want to have fun in the sun and learn how to properly run? Join us for PErfectly Fun PE! This class will give you the physical education skills you need in middle school and beyond. Build your confidence and self-esteem in all things fitness by working with others and PErfecting your fitness goals.

Explore the mystical world of Greek Mythology through cooperative and project-based learning. You’ll learn about heroines, heroes, goddesses and gods, and the role they played in Greek history through art, literature, role-playing and teamwork.

No need to go on a summer trip to Europe! During this course, we will send your taste buds on a journey and explore the authentic flavors you can find across the European continent. Get ready to eat all the delicious foods that you have always wanted to try.

#402A  Oil Pastel Party - Techniques

Anything crayons can do, oil pastels can do better! Oil pastels are fun to use because they are vibrant and versatile. This class will cover oil pastel basics and also introduce techniques such as Sgraffito, color blending, temperature tricks and more. Come learn how to enhance your artwork with oil pastels!

This class will cover the basics of watercolor painting by explaining the different materials, what to look for in brushes and paper, and the difference between various grades of paint. Using demos and painting from still life or your own photos, you will learn how to work with watercolors to create beautiful works of art!


#409B  The Art of DJ’ing and Beat Making

#502A  Architectural and Nature Drawings

Do you enjoy drawing? Do you pay close attention to the architecture and nature around you? Learn how to create beautiful art by observing our lush surroundings. We will regularly warm up with drawing games and engage in creative activities to unlock and stimulate your brain. Whether you enjoy drawing from the world around you or your imagination, this class will help you fine-tune your observational skills while having fun in the process.

Develop your own unique style or copy the masters, all while gaining the confidence and creativity you need to advance.
